Abuja, NIGERIA – Yusuf Buhari, the son of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, has officially declared his intention to contest for the House of Representatives seat representing the Sandamu/Daura/Mai’Adua Federal Constituency in the 2027 general elections.
Bashir Ahmad, a former aide to the late President, confirmed the development to Okay News on Monday, April 6, 2026. According to Ahmad, the decision followed “wide consultations” with key stakeholders in the constituency. Yusuf will be seeking the seat under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The move comes after weeks of circulating rumors and growing calls from constituents in Daura and surrounding areas for the younger Buhari to step into the political arena and continue his father’s legacy.
Yusuf’s father, Major General Muhammadu Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, passed away on July 13, 2025, at the age of 82.
The late elder statesman was a towering figure in the APC and the Daura community, and his son’s entry into the race is expected to significantly shift the political dynamics in Katsina State as the 2027 election cycle begins to take shape.
