ABUJA, Nigeria — The presidential candidate of Nigeria’s African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, arrived at the Federal High Court in Abuja, Nigeria, on Monday, June 22, 2026, for his trial following the issuance of a bench warrant for his arrest.
The News Agency of Nigeria reported that Omoyele Sowore, who is also the publisher of the media outlet Sahara Reporters, entered the court complex accompanied by members of his group carrying placards. Okay News reports that Justice Mohammed Umar revoked the bail previously granted to the defendant on June 16, 2026, following his failure to appear in court to face trial.
Justice Mohammed Umar issued the bench warrant during a ruling on an oral application made by the prosecution counsel for Nigeria’s Department of State Services, Akinkolu Kehinde, Senior Advocate of Nigeria. The Department of State Services is prosecuting the politician for allegedly making false claims against Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu by describing him as a criminal in publications made on his X and Facebook accounts.
The Federal High Court had not yet commenced its scheduled sitting at the time of filing the report on Monday.
