Spotify has announced multi-award-winning R&B sensation Elaine as the EQUAL Artist for October 2024. Elaine, who first gained global recognition with her chart-topping debut EP Elements, continues to captivate audiences with her soulful and contemporary R&B sound.

A former Spotify RADAR artist, Elaine’s top listeners hail from South Africa, the United States, Nigeria, Kenya, and the United Kingdom, reinforcing her status as an international music force.

Her hits such as “You’re the One” and “When I’m in Love” have earned her acclaim for her heartfelt storytelling and memorable melodies.

Speaking about her recognition as an EQUAL artist, Elaine said: “I’m honoured to be part of the EQUAL programme and incredibly proud to stand as an independent African woman, carving out my own path and claiming space in an industry traditionally dominated by men.”

Elaine is set to release her highly anticipated project, Stone Cold Heart, on 11th October.

The album, described as deeply personal, chronicles her journey through trauma, heartache, and transformation. It features a blend of soulful ballads and new sonic explorations that reflect her growth as an artist. The project aims to offer catharsis and empowerment, resonating with listeners who have faced their own hardships.

Elaine’s rise from a South African breakthrough artist to a global star is marked by resilience and advocacy. She uses her platform to raise awareness about mental health and inspire young people to pursue their dreams.

Phiona Okumu, Spotify’s Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa, praised Elaine’s inclusion in the EQUAL Africa program, saying: “Elaine exemplifies the caliber of talent the program aims to support. Spotify is proud to be associated with her and will continue to provide support for women in music, amplifying their voices and showcasing their incredible talents to a global audience.”

In an exclusive interview, Elaine shared more insights about her journey:

What is that one surprising thing your fans might not know about you?
“My fans seem to think I can’t speak any South African languages. It’s always funny to me, but to clear the air, I speak quite a few South African languages fluently.”

When did you realize that making music was in your destiny, and what is your WHY for pursuing this craft?
“I’ve loved music and believed it was my destiny since I was a little girl. I’ve been singing since I was six, and it has always been my main source of pride. Music gives me purpose, and that’s why I’ll never stop singing.”

Which African songs or artists did you grow up listening to?
“Lebo Mathosa and Brenda Fassie.”

To someone who has never heard your music, how would you describe the sound, tone, and style?
“My music is a true representation of my life, heart, and thoughts. It’s constantly evolving, but at its core, it’s true R&B—emotional, real, and raw.”

Any advice for someone dreading following their dreams?
“You deserve to give yourself a chance. Go for it.”
