Sokoto, Nigeria – Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III has officially announced that the Shawwal crescent moon has not been sighted in Nigeria, declaring Friday, March 20, 2026, as the day for the celebration of Eid al-Fitr.
Okay News reports that the announcement follows a nationwide moon-sighting exercise earlier directed by the Sultan, who had urged Muslims across the country to look out for the crescent on the 29th day of Ramadan and report verified sightings through designated channels.
With the moon not sighted, the fasting period of Ramadan will complete 30 days, in line with Islamic tradition, before the commencement of Eid-el-Fitr celebrations nationwide.
The Sultan, who also serves as President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, is expected to lead Muslims in marking the end of the holy month, while calling for continued reflection on the values of faith, discipline, and compassion learned during Ramadan.
