William Troost-Ekong, the captain of Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, has officially joined Saudi Arabian club Al-Kholood FC from PAOK Thessaloniki FC in Greece. The transfer was announced by Al-Kholood on their X account on Friday, marking a new chapter in the defender’s career.

The 30-year-old is set to compete in the 2024-2025 Saudi Pro League season, according to the announcement by Al-Kholood. Troost-Ekong’s move to the Arabian Peninsula follows a brief yet impactful stint with PAOK Thessaloniki, where he joined in July 2023 on a three-year contract.

Shortly before the transfer was confirmed, Troost-Ekong took to social media to express his gratitude to PAOK Thessaloniki FC, the fans, and his teammates. In a heartfelt farewell message, he reflected on his time with the Greek club, describing it as “amazing.”

“Dear PAOK, after an amazing year and season in Thessaloniki, I want to thank everyone for the opportunity to share and be part of those moments with you,” his farewell message read.

“I want to thank the president, club staff, medical team, General Lucescu, assistants and especially my teammates who have become my family, for the belief and hard work that resulted in an unforgettable championship and special European nights.”

He also extended his appreciation to the fans, acknowledging their unwavering support during challenging times. “Toumba is something special, and now I understand what MONO PAOK means,” he added, referring to the passionate atmosphere at PAOK’s home stadium. “I wish everyone another successful season and I will continue to follow PAOK. All the best.”

Troost-Ekong’s tenure at PAOK was marked by significant achievements, including leading Nigeria to a silver medal at the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire, where he was named the tournament’s best player after scoring three goals.
