Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, have set their sights on winning a fourth Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title as preparations intensify ahead of the 2025 tournament in Morocco.
Head coach Eric Chelle said the team’s focus is firmly on redemption after their heartbreaking 2–1 defeat to hosts Côte d’Ivoire in the 2023 final. The Nigerian side, one of the continent’s traditional powerhouses, will head into this year’s competition as a top contender.
“Of course we want to win it. Personally, I want to win AFCON. My last — and first — AFCON was a fantastic experience. I think Morocco will be a great tournament, too. The players feel the same. Since March we’ve played every match under pressure,” Chelle told CAFonline.
The Super Eagles, three-time African champions (1980, 1994, and 2013), have been drawn in Group C alongside Tanzania and Tunisia. Their campaign will begin on Tuesday, December 23, when they face the Taifa Stars of Tanzania in their opening group match.
Chelle, who took charge of the Nigerian team earlier this year, said his squad has the talent, mentality, and determination to reclaim continental glory, stressing that the players are motivated by the near miss in 2023.
Okay News reports that the 2025 AFCON will be hosted in Morocco from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026, marking the first time the tournament will be held during the winter months since its rescheduling.
