Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, has inaugurated a committee to advise on the implementation of local government autonomy in the state. The move follows the Supreme Court’s judgment granting financial autonomy to local governments.

Governor Kefas stated that the committee’s establishment demonstrates his administration’s commitment to decentralization and local empowerment. He noted that the local government autonomy will uphold democratic principles and ensure efficient governance.

The committee’s terms of reference include implementation oversight, capacity building, financial autonomy, administrative reforms, security coordination, community engagement, evaluation, and feedback. The governor expressed confidence that the committee will achieve the state’s vision of decentralized and empowered local governments.

This development comes after Governor Kefas had already granted full autonomy to local government chairmen, directing them to manage the joint account allocation committee and administrative affairs. The inauguration of the advisory committee marks a significant step towards actualizing local government autonomy in Taraba State.
