Konduga, Borno State, Nigeria — Armed terrorists suspected to be linked to the extremist groups Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province attacked a nomadic settlement in northeastern Nigeria, killing one herder and stealing a large number of livestock.

Okay News reports that the attack occurred in Wuturo, a rural settlement in Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State in northeastern Nigeria, a region that has faced years of insurgency linked to militant groups operating around the Lake Chad Basin.

The Borno State Police Command, the branch of the Nigeria Police Force responsible for law enforcement in Borno State, confirmed the incident on Thursday through its Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police Nahum Daso.

According to the police, the attack happened late on Tuesday night.

Daso said the settlement was invaded by armed men who arrived on motorcycles.

“The Borno State Police Command condemned the recent attack on a nomadic settlement at Wuturo, Konduga Local Government Area, allegedly carried out by suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists.

“Following a report received by Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, Konduga, at the Konduga Police Division that on 10th March, 2026, at about 2230hrs, unknown gunmen riding on five motorcycles invaded the settlement.”

Initial findings from security authorities indicated that one herder, identified as 40 year old Ahmadu Baida, was fatally shot during the assault.

Another victim, 30 year old Mohammadu Baida, suffered a gunshot wound to his left leg.

“The attackers also rustled about 1,400 sheep belonging to the herdsmen,” Daso added.

Police said a combined security response was immediately launched after the incident was reported.

The operation involved personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Armed Forces, the Civilian Joint Task Force, a volunteer security group supporting the military in northeastern Nigeria, as well as local hunters.

The team was led by the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the Konduga Police Division.

“The victims were evacuated to the hospital, where Ahmadu Baida was certified dead on arrival by a medical doctor, while the injured victim is currently receiving treatment and responding positively,” Daso said.

The police spokesperson explained that the operation was carried out under the directive of the Commissioner of Police for Borno State, Naziru Abdulmajid.

According to him, coordinated strategies have now been activated with other security agencies and community groups in order to locate the attackers and recover the stolen animals.

“Tactical and intelligence assets have also been strategically deployed across the affected area and adjoining communities to strengthen security presence,” he said.

“The Borno State Police Command commiserates with the family of the deceased and assures residents of the Command’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state.”

Authorities also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements or individuals to security agencies.

The latest attack adds to continuing security concerns in northeastern Nigeria, where Boko Haram and its splinter faction, the Islamic State West Africa Province, have carried out attacks on both civilians and military facilities for more than a decade.

The development follows another recent incident in Borno State in which terrorists reportedly attacked a Nigerian Army base in Kukawa Local Government Area, engaging soldiers in a prolonged gun battle that lasted nearly 24 hours and resulted in the deaths of several troops, including a commanding officer.

Despite ongoing military operations aimed at ending the insurgency, sporadic attacks on communities and security positions continue to pose a challenge to efforts to restore lasting stability in the region.
