Nigeria’s Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has committed more than N30 billion this year to improve safety across universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. Okay News reports that the disclosure was made by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Alhaji Aminu Masari, during an engagement in Katsina.
Masari said the investment has already strengthened security for students, lecturers, and other residents on campuses, noting that the effort aligns with the Federal Government’s push to create safer academic environments amid rising national security concerns.
He explained that institutions have been applying for support to install solar-powered streetlights, perimeter fencing, and surveillance-enhancing infrastructure designed to reduce threats within and around campuses.
Masari also highlighted the backing of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, particularly the approval of a 50% Development Levy under the 2024 Nigerian Tax Bill, which will begin in January and is expected to significantly expand TETFund’s capacity to deliver interventions.
He added that a recent national town hall meeting was held to update stakeholders on the Fund’s ongoing programmes and gather feedback from policymakers, vice chancellors, ASUU leaders, students, and lawmakers to support more inclusive reforms across the tertiary education system.
According to him, the platform helps TETFund address critical challenges as it works toward strengthening Nigeria’s global competitiveness in research, manpower development, and educational infrastructure.
Nairametrics previously reported that TETFund received a record N1.6 trillion for nationwide interventions, including allocations for infrastructure, security, medical training, energy projects, and student support. Of this amount, N25 billion was earmarked specifically for campus safety projects.
