Abuja, Nigeria — The Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON), the umbrella body for public and private electronic media owners in the country, has announced that three state governors will be honored at the upcoming 2026 Nigeria Broadcasting Awards. The event is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, in Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria.

The recipients of the special recognition include Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State, located in the southern coastal region; Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State in the northwest; and Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State, also in the northwest. According to a statement released on Friday, April 3, 2026, by the Executive Secretary of the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria, Yemisi Bamgbose, the governors are being celebrated for their consistent support of the media industry and their roles in advancing broadcasting within their respective states.

Okay News reports that the awards ceremony will be held at the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Conference Centre between 6:00 pm and 9:00 pm West African Time (GMT+1). The organization described the selected leaders as essential partners in progress, noting that their efforts help foster professional excellence and institutional growth.

The Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria stated that “Leaders who create enabling environments for media to thrive deserve to be celebrated as champions of democratic engagement and information dissemination.” The organization further explained that the awards were established during its 74th General Assembly in 2021 with the goal of promoting high-quality media practices and international best standards.

The selection process for the 2026 edition was comprehensive, involving 204 entries that reviewed broadcast performances from the 2024 calendar year. A panel of experts, chaired by Danladi Bako, a former Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC)—the government regulator for the broadcasting industry—oversaw the evaluation.

In addition to the honors for the state governors, the ceremony will feature 24 competitive categories. These include awards for the best television and radio stations of the year, as well as individual prizes for outstanding reporters, producers, and news presenters. The Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria noted that the primary objective of the event is to encourage a stronger collaboration between government authorities and media institutions to ensure the continued development of the sector.
