Abuja, Nigeria – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun. The letter was submitted, citing ‘pressing family considerations’, Okay News understands.
According to a State House press release signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Tinubu received Egbetokun’s resignation earlier on Tuesday and expressed appreciation for his decades of service to the Nigeria Police Force.
The President commended Egbetokun’s dedication, professionalism, and commitment to strengthening the nation’s internal security architecture during his tenure. Appointed in June 2023, Egbetokun was serving a four-year term scheduled to end in June 2027, in line with the amended provisions of the Police Act.
In response to prevailing security challenges, Tinubu approved the appointment of Tunji Disu, an Assistant Inspector-General of Police, as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect.
The President expressed confidence that Disu’s operational experience and leadership capacity would provide focused direction for the police force at a critical time.
In compliance with the Police Act 2020, Tinubu is expected to convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General of Police. His name will subsequently be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.
The President reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening national security, enhancing institutional capacity, and ensuring the Nigeria Police Force remains professional and accountable in carrying out its constitutional responsibilities.
