President Bola Tinubu and Saint Lucia’s Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre have reached a historic agreement to establish formal diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Saint Lucia, signaling a new chapter in bilateral cooperation. The commitment was made during Tinubu’s courtesy visit to the Prime Minister’s official residence in Castries on the second day of his state visit to the Caribbean nation.

According to a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, the Nigerian leader expressed deep appreciation for the warm hospitality extended to him and described Saint Lucians as “valued friends and brothers.” He emphasized the enduring connections shaped by a shared history and collective resilience, highlighting the cultural and historical ties linking Africa and the Caribbean.

“Our two nations are bound by history, culture, and common aspirations. We are determined to nurture and expand this relationship,” Tinubu said. He outlined plans to strengthen bilateral engagement, which would lay the foundation for enhanced cooperation in trade, investment, tourism, education, cultural exchange, and consular services for citizens of both countries.

The leaders identified key sectors for collaboration, including agriculture, health, and infrastructure development, aiming to foster mutual growth and understanding. Tinubu also reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to supporting Small Island Developing States (SIDS) on global issues such as climate change, disaster response, and development financing.

Prime Minister Pierre highlighted the importance of education and expressed interest in deepening cooperation, aiming for one university graduate per household in Saint Lucia. He also pointed to the potential for cultural exchange, noting Saint Lucia’s global recognition through festivals like the Jazz and Arts Festival and the opportunity to share expertise with Nigeria’s entertainment industry.

The visit underscored the importance of people-to-people diplomacy, with Tinubu engaging the Nigerian community in Saint Lucia during a special reception hosted by the Prime Minister. Both leaders stressed the need for stronger South-South cooperation amid shifting global dynamics, emphasizing sustainable development and solidarity.

This landmark visit marks a significant step in bridging Africa and the Caribbean, opening pathways for economic ties and mutual prosperity, okay.ng reports.
