Tinubu Calls for Unity as APC Begins Primaries for 2027 Elections

By Adamu Abubakar Isa

ABUJA, Nigeria – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a rallying cry for discipline and sportsmanship within the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the party kicks off its primary elections nationwide today, May 15, 2026.

Okay News reports that the President, in a statement released late Thursday, described the exercise as a “referendum on our unity, resilience, and strength.” The primary cycle begins today with House of Representatives aspirants and will culminate in the high-stakes presidential primary scheduled for May 25, 2026.

Highlighting the party’s founding principles of “progressive politics and consensus democracy,” the President threw his weight behind the use of consensus candidates where possible, in line with the Electoral Act (2026). “It is a commendable option that would help in reducing rancour and bad blood among party members,” Tinubu stated, though he urged those in contested races to avoid “do-or-die politics.”

Level Playing Field and Demographics

The President sent a stern warning to party leaders and governors to remain neutral and provide a “level playing field” for all contenders. He emphasized that even in defeat, aspirants should be given the “satisfaction of a fair contest.” Furthermore, he made a direct appeal for the inclusion of women and youth, stating, “We cannot afford to relegate the two significant demographics of our population.”

Security and Professionalism

In a direct charge to the Nigerian Police and other security agencies, the President cautioned against any form of interference in the democratic process. “Your duties strictly centre on ensuring peaceful exercise. Nothing more,” he declared, warning against agents acting as “interlopers” during the voting process.

As the ruling party enters its fourth election cycle, Tinubu reminded members that the “ultimate winners are those who don’t choose to wreck the boat,” urging losers to utilize internal appeal committees rather than engaging in anti-party activities that would benefit the opposition.
