Abuja, Nigeria – President Bola Tinubu has charged the Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to restore peace and strengthen security across the country.
The President gave the directive on Wednesday at the State House during the decoration of Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police, following the retirement of Kayode Egbetokun. The appointment is subject to ratification by the Nigeria Police Council and confirmation by the Senate. The council is expected to meet next week.
President Tinubu said Disu’s appointment comes at a critical time, urging him to rebuild public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force and work collaboratively with other security agencies to safeguard lives and property.
“I made this decision for you to assume this responsibility. I know your record. I saw the dedication you exhibited while you were in Lagos when I was governor,” the President said, in a statement made available to Okay News by Bayo Onaonuga, special adviser to President Tinubu on Information and Strategy. Tinubu also expressed confidence in the Acting IGP’s discipline, operational experience and leadership capacity.
He tasked Disu to lead firmly but fairly, demand professionalism at every level and prioritise the safety of Nigerians. The President also urged him to advance the security pillars of his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in addressing banditry, terrorism and other criminal activities.
President Tinubu reaffirmed his belief that Nigeria would overcome its security challenges under committed leadership and assured the Acting IGP of his full support in carrying out the mandate.
The President also paid tribute to the outgoing Inspector-General, Kayode Egbetokun, thanking him for his service and contributions to maintaining law and order. He encouraged him to offer guidance to his successor, noting that Disu’s success would form part of his legacy.
Among dignitaries present at the ceremony were the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori; and retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, alongside senior government officials and members of the Acting IGP’s family.
