President Bola Tinubu has expressed strong disapproval of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC)’s decision to call for a strike within the first nine months of an administration, labeling it as unacceptable.

The president made this statement during the inauguration of the red line rail project in Lagos on Thursday, urging the NLC to prioritize peace and acknowledging that it is not the sole representative voice of Nigerians.

The NLC had earlier declared a two-day nationwide mass protest scheduled for February 27 and 28 to address the economic hardships faced by Nigerians.

While the protest took place in various parts of the country on Tuesday, the NLC leadership subsequently announced the suspension of the second day of the protest, stating that their objectives were achieved on the first day.

Joe Ajaero, President of the NLC, alleged intimidation and harassment of the congress in attempts to obstruct the street marches during the protest.

President Tinubu emphasized the need for the labour union to exercise restraint, particularly in the timing of such actions. “The Labour union should understand that no matter how much we cling to our freedom and rights… to call for a strike within nine months of an administration is unacceptable,” Tinubu stated.

“If you want to participate in the electoral process, wait until 2027. If not, maintain peace, you are not the only voice of Nigerians.”
