President Bola Tinubu has directed ministers to resume a public performance review next week, as part of efforts to promote transparency and keep Nigerians informed about government programmes.
The directive was announced by Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, during a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday.
Idris stated that the review sessions would take place at the National Press Centre, where ministers would provide updates on their activities and performance.
He noted that during last year’s first edition of the review, only 25 out of over 40 ministers attended to give an account of their work and plans. However, he assured that this year’s edition would be more comprehensive, with all ministers expected to participate in the coming months.
“Recall last year, the ministry invited several ministers, about 25 of them turned up last year to the national press center to give account of what they have done or intended to do at that time so that the nation gets to know the activities and programmes of the government.”
He further emphasized the importance of the ministerial briefing, stating that it aligns with President Tinubu’s vision of ensuring Nigerians are regularly updated on government activities.
“This year, we are kick-starting another edition of the ministerial press briefing that usually occurs at the national press center.
“The ministerial briefing as directed by Mr President is commencing next week, and over the next couple of months, by the time the administration is two years in office, we would have heard from all ministers of government.”
Idris explained that while some ministries have more than one minister, not all ministers may speak at the same time during the briefings.
“When I say ministers, I mean ministers because sometimes you have two ministerial heads, and it’s not the two ministers that get to speak at all times.
“This is important and is in line with the desire of president Bola Tinubu to always inform Nigerians about what the government is doing.”
