Abuja, NIGERIA — President Bola Tinubu has welcomed the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s (ICAO) latest assessment of Nigeria, which awarded the nation a 91.45% Effective Implementation (EI) score for aviation safety.
The result, announced by ICAO auditors at the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) headquarters marks the highest safety rating in the country’s history.
The Universal Safety Oversight Audit Programme (USOAP) conducted by the United Nations agency measures a country’s ability to manage safety risks effectively.
Okay News reports that Nigeria’s score significantly outperforms the West African regional average of 61.1% and the global average of 70.4%, positioning the nation as a leading aviation hub on the continent.
President Tinubu attributed the achievement to his administration’s focus on infrastructure and transportation as primary enablers of growth. To align with this vision, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo SAN, has prioritized strict compliance with safety regulations as the cornerstone of his five-point agenda for the sector.
“This rating affirms the nation’s aviation safety standards and makes it a more attractive destination for investment in infrastructure, maintenance facilities, and airline operations,” the President stated. He urged the Ministry of Aviation to implement every recommendation made during the audit to ensure Nigeria not only maintains its current standing but continues to climb the international rankings.
