ABUJA, Nigeria – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday, 2 April 2026 (WAT), received Chad’s President, Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Okay News reports that President Déby arrived at about 2:00 p.m. (WAT) for the official visit—his first to Nigeria since President Tinubu attended his inauguration in N’Djamena on May 23, 2024.
The visit marks a continuation of diplomatic engagements between both countries, coming just a week after President Tinubu hosted another foreign leader in Abuja. While details of the meeting were not immediately disclosed, discussions are believed to have centered on regional security cooperation, particularly in the Lake Chad Basin.
Chad remains a key partner in the fight against insurgent groups such as Boko Haram and Islamic State-affiliated factions operating across the region, which includes Nigeria, Chad, Niger, and Cameroon.
President Déby, who assumed leadership following the death of his father in 2021, has since transitioned from military rule to an elected presidency after winning the 2024 elections. His visit underscores ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral ties and enhance joint security strategies in West and Central Africa.
