ABUJA, Nigeria – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended condolences to the family of former Nigerian football star Henry Onyemanze Nwosu following his death at the age of 62.
Okay News reports that the Nigerian leader joined the country’s football community in mourning the legendary midfielder, widely remembered for his exceptional skill and influence during his playing career.
The President recalled Nwosu’s remarkable performance as a 17-year-old member of the Nigeria national football team, then known as the Green Eagles, that won the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations.
Tinubu also highlighted the late footballer’s more than a decade of service to the national team, noting his participation in subsequent continental tournaments, including the 1982 Africa Cup of Nations, 1984 Africa Cup of Nations and 1988 Africa Cup of Nations.
According to the President, Nigerians will continue to remember the former playmaker for the pride and joy he brought to the nation and for inspiring many young athletes to pursue excellence in football.
He also prayed for the peaceful repose of Nwosu’s soul and comfort for his family during the period of mourning.
