ABUJA, Nigeria — Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, secured the All Progressives Congress nomination for the 2027 presidential election on Saturday, May 23, 2026, turning political attention toward his choice of a vice-presidential running mate.
Okay News reports that Tinubu currently maintains full control of the party structure, leaving the nomination uncontested. This path contrasts with the 2022 primary election, where Tinubu faced opposition from internal party members before selecting Vice President Kashim Shettima as his running mate.
In the 2022 primary, Tinubu contested against the sitting vice president, Yemi Osinbajo, and the former governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi. Following his victory, the selection of Shettima drew objections from critics concerned with religious balancing because both candidates are Muslims.
Political analysts indicated that the focus on the same-faith ticket has lessened during the current administration. This shift is attributed partly to the role of the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, who is a Christian and a pastor in the Redeemed Church.
The administrative partnership is further supported by cooperation between the First Lady and the wife of the vice president, Hajia Nana Shettima. Nana Shettima operates as the national vice-chairman of the Renewed Hope Initiative, a development organization founded by Oluremi Tinubu to implement welfare programs for women and girls across multiple states.
