President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially written to the Senate, requesting the confirmation of Engr. Abdullahi Ramat as the next Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

The president’s letter was read aloud during Tuesday’s plenary session by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, marking one of the key items on the order paper as the National Assembly resumed legislative activities.

The upper chamber had gone on its traditional annual recess on July 24, 2025. This yearly break enables lawmakers to return to their constituencies for oversight functions and direct engagement with their electorates.

However, the Senate had initially scheduled its return for September 23 but later shifted the date by two additional weeks, resuming instead on October 7, 2025. The delay was attributed to extended committee work and ongoing political consultations.

The president’s nomination of Engr. Ramat comes at a crucial time when the electricity sector is under pressure to deliver on the government’s power reform agenda. Stakeholders say the new NERC leadership will play a decisive role in shaping tariff regulation, consumer protection, and the expansion of Nigeria’s national grid.

Okay News reports that the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, established in 2005 under the Electric Pwer Sector Reform Act, serves as the independent regulator for Nigeria’s power sector, responsible for setting tariffs and ensuring fair competition among market players.

The Senate is expected to screen and confirm Ramat’s appointment in the coming days, a process that will determine the direction of the commission’s next phase of reforms.
