ABUJA, Nigeria – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on Nigerian leaders to uphold the values of honesty, simplicity, and self-discipline, saying the legacy of former President Muhammadu Buhari continues to inspire the nation one year after his death.
Okay News reports that the President made the appeal on Monday during a prayer session held in Abuja to mark the first anniversary of Buhari’s passing. Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, described the late leader as a patriot whose commitment to Nigeria remained unwavering throughout his years in public service.
According to the President, Buhari’s transition from a military ruler to a civilian democrat made him one of the country’s most remarkable leaders. He said the late president’s leadership was defined by consistency, integrity and dedication to national service.
“President Buhari gave everything he had to this country without reservation. He served with courage, conviction and patriotism,” Tinubu said, adding that the former leader earned the lasting trust of ordinary Nigerians through a lifetime of discipline and personal integrity.
The President also reflected on their political partnership, describing Buhari as a committed ally in the pursuit of a progressive Nigeria. He urged Buhari’s supporters and public office holders to preserve his legacy by demonstrating the same principles in governance and daily life.
During the event, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, announced plans to establish a foundation in Buhari’s honour to preserve his ideals and contributions to national development.
Former Head of State Gen. Yakubu Gowon (retd.), Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, and other dignitaries paid tribute to the late president, describing his leadership style and devotion to public service as worthy of emulation.
Special prayers for Buhari were offered by John Cardinal Onaiyekan, Sheikh Abdulkadir Al-Salman Sholagberu, and other religious and traditional leaders. The ceremony concluded with the presentation of a book of tributes by Vice President Shettima.
