The Federal Government has scrapped the customary military parade planned for the 26th Democracy Day celebrations on Thursday, June 12, 2025. The decision was announced without an official explanation.

President Bola Tinubu will instead deliver a national broadcast at 7 a.m. on Thursday, as confirmed by the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Democracy Day Celebration in a statement on Wednesday. This broadcast will mark the formal start of the day’s commemorations.

In addition to the broadcast, President Tinubu is scheduled to participate in a special joint session of the National Assembly at midday. This session will focus on Nigeria’s democratic achievements and reforms under the current administration. The day will also feature a public lecture at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja at 4 p.m., with the theme “Consolidating on the Gains of Nigeria’s Democracy: Necessity of Enduring Reforms.”

The statement, signed by Abdulhakeem Adeoye representing the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, also noted that only accredited State House correspondents will cover the public lecture.
