A fatal road crash claimed five lives on Friday evening when a Dangote Cement truck lost control and collided with a tricycle along the Alapoka axis of the Papalanto–Ilaro Road in Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State.

Confirming the tragic incident on Saturday, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, said the accident occurred around 8:30 p.m.

According to Akinbiyi, the truck experienced a brake failure and rammed into the tricycle carrying five passengers, instantly killing everyone on board.

He explained that the vehicles involved were an unregistered tricycle and a Dangote truck with registration number GRZ 767 XA.

Akinbiyi stated, “A fatal road traffic accident occurred at Alapoka Village, Papalanto–Ilaro Road, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State on Friday at 8:25 p.m. The accident involved an unregistered tricycle and a Dangote truck with the number plate GRZ 767 XA. The tricycle was conveying five people. The five people died on the spot.

“According to an eyewitness, the truck lost its brakes and rammed into the tricycle, but unfortunately the driver was not observant that he had collided with the tricycle until its tyre crushed the tricycle and the passengers.”

okay.ng reports that TRACE officers, led by Acting TRACE Head, Adedayo Omonayajo, and the Ilaro Divisional Commander, Salako Idowu, rushed to the scene for rescue operations.

However, their presence triggered anger among residents who attempted to attack the officials. The situation was later calmed by operatives of the Amotekun Corps, who restored order.

“The Acting TRACE Head and the Ilaro Commander led a rescue team to the scene and were almost attacked by angry residents, but the intervention of the Amotekun Corps doused the tension,” Akinbiyi added.

He further revealed that the remains of the victims were deposited in a morgue by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

This incident adds to a growing list of fatal crashes involving Dangote trucks in recent years. In November 2024, four people died in a similar brake-failure incident in Lagos and Ogun States.

Also, in June 2021, a Dangote truck in Ogun crushed a motorcyclist and passenger, leading enraged residents to set the vehicle ablaze.
