Tragedy struck on the Umuahia-Enugu axis of the Port Harcourt Enugu Highway on Thursday morning when a trailer crashed into an 18-seater commercial bus at a police checkpoint, killing all occupants. The accident occurred at the Lokpanta area of Abia State in the early hours of the day.

According to eyewitnesses, the bus was awaiting police clearance when the truck driver lost control and rammed into it, killing the driver and all passengers. The bodies of the victims still littered the scene as of 8:20 am, with protesting bus drivers and motorists blocking the road and demanding justice for the victims.

The protesters, including colleagues of the bus driver, have vowed to remain at the scene until Governor Alex Otti visits. At least 18 people are feared dead in the crash.
