Troops of the Nigerian Army have neutralised at least 80 armed bandits attempting to infiltrate Kebbi State from the Zamfara border, in one of the largest military operations in recent months.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Communication and Strategy, Abdullahi Idris Zuru, announced the development in a statement released on Sunday, describing it as a decisive victory in Kebbi’s ongoing war against banditry.

According to Zuru, the successful operation in Ngaski Local Government Area followed the strategic deployment of well-equipped troops across border communities shared with Sokoto, Zamfara, and Niger States — an initiative directed by Governor Nasir Idris.

Okay News reports that the governor had earlier sought additional reinforcements from the Nigerian military to strengthen border security, which has since led to the neutralisation of several criminal groups and the restoration of calm in previously troubled areas.

Zuru explained that credible intelligence prompted the tactical positioning of troops around Makurdi village, where they engaged the heavily armed attackers in fierce gun duels on Friday and Saturday nights.

“About 80 bandits were neutralised, while several others fled with gunshot wounds,” said the Director of Security, Abdulrahaman Usman. He added that dozens of motorcycles and two abducted victims were recovered from the scene.

He further noted that collaboration between the Kebbi State Government and security agencies, particularly the Nigerian Army, has been instrumental in maintaining momentum against banditry in the region.

Governor Idris, according to the statement, has donated 100 Hilux vehicles and 5,000 motorcycles to enhance troop mobility and operational response capacity across the state.

In his reaction, the Emir of Yauri, Zayyanu Muhammad, commended the bravery of the troops and hailed Governor Idris for his commitment to protecting lives and property.

“The people of Kebbi are proud of the sacrifices of our soldiers and the leadership of Governor Idris, whose efforts are restoring peace and hope to our communities,” the Emir stated.

Security sources disclosed that the sustained offensive has forced several bandit factions to retreat deeper into forested areas, signalling that Kebbi State is becoming increasingly difficult terrain for criminal networks.
