United States President, Donald J. Trump, has directed the withdrawal of the United States of America from sixty six international organisations, marking one of the most extensive reversals of American participation in multilateral institutions in modern diplomatic history.

Okay News reports that the directive was announced following the signing of a Presidential Memorandum on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, as part of the administration’s renewed effort to realign United States foreign engagement with what it describes as core national interests.

According to an official Fact Sheet released by the White House in Washington, District of Columbia, President Trump ordered all Executive Departments and Agencies of the United States Government to immediately end participation in and funding for the affected organisations.

“Today, President Donald J. Trump signed a Presidential Memorandum directing the withdrawal of the United States from 66 international organisations that no longer serve American interests,” the White House said in a statement published on its official website.

The administration disclosed that the affected bodies include thirty five non United Nations organisations and thirty one agencies under the United Nations system. It explained that these institutions were identified after an extensive internal review of international intergovernmental organisations, conventions, and treaties supported or funded by the United States.

Officials said the review concluded that many of the organisations operate “contrary to United States national interests, security, economic prosperity, or sovereignty,” prompting the decision to disengage.

“These withdrawals will end American taxpayer funding and involvement in entities that advance globalist agendas over United States priorities, or that address important issues inefficiently or ineffectively such that United States taxpayer dollars are best allocated in other ways,” the White House stated.

Emphasis On Sovereignty And Cost Control

The administration framed the move as a step toward restoring national independence and fiscal discipline, arguing that years of financial contributions have produced limited benefits for the United States.

“American taxpayers have spent billions on these organisations with little return, while they often criticise United States policies, advance agendas contrary to our values, or waste taxpayer dollars by purporting to address important issues but not achieving any real results,” the statement added.

The White House further accused several of the organisations of promoting policies that conflict with American economic strength and self determination.

“Many of these bodies promote radical climate policies, global governance, and ideological programs that conflict with United States sovereignty and economic strength,” the Fact Sheet noted.

Continuation Of A Broader Global Retreat

The latest withdrawals build on earlier decisions taken since President Trump returned to office. The administration confirmed that the United States has already exited the World Health Organization and the Paris Climate Agreement, both long standing pillars of global cooperation.

“Immediately upon returning to office, President Trump initiated the withdrawal of the United States from the World Health Organization and the Paris Climate Agreement,” the White House said.

In addition, the President issued a Presidential Memorandum on his first day back in office notifying the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development that its Global Tax Deal would have no legal force within the United States. He also ordered an investigation into whether foreign tax frameworks unfairly target American companies.

Weeks later, Trump signed an Executive Order withdrawing the United States from the United Nations Human Rights Council and banning future funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for the Near East.

Domestic Priorities Take Center Stage

According to the administration, the withdrawals are part of a broader plan to redirect resources toward domestic development.

“He has prioritised American interests by redirecting focus and resources toward domestic priorities such as infrastructure, military readiness, and border security, and acting swiftly to protect American companies from foreign interference,” the statement said.

While critics are expected to argue that the move could reduce United States influence on the global stage, the White House insists the decision represents a recalibration rather than a retreat.

On the social media platform X, the White House reaffirmed that thirty one of the affected organisations are United Nations entities, while thirty five fall outside the United Nations system.

“Today, President Donald J. Trump signed a Presidential Memorandum directing the withdrawal of the United States from 66 international organisations that no longer serve American interests including: 35 non United Nations organisations and 31 United Nations entities,” the post concluded.
