WASHINGTON, United States – United States President Donald Trump has issued a strict forty-eight-hour ultimatum to the government of Iran, demanding the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping. If Iran fails to comply, President Trump warned that the United States military will destroy Iranian energy infrastructure, starting with the largest power plants. This major escalation, occurring on Saturday, March 21, 2026, follows a highly destructive Iranian missile attack on southern Israel.

The ultimatum arrives just one day after the United States leader suggested he was considering reducing military operations following three weeks of intense conflict. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil passage located between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, remains completely closed. Consequently, thousands of additional American Marines are currently deploying to the Middle East. President Trump stated on his social media platform, Truth Social, that the United States would hit and obliterate Iranian power plants if the strait is not reopened by 23:44 Greenwich Mean Time on Monday, March 23, 2026, which translates to 00:44 West Africa Time on Tuesday.

Okay News reports that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi countered the threat by stating Tehran only restricted vessels from nations directly involved in attacks against Iran. According to the Fars news agency, the Iranian army warned it would target energy and water desalination infrastructure belonging to the United States and its regional allies if attacked. This standoff happens as the global economy faces immediate impacts, with North Sea Brent crude oil prices surging above $105 a barrel due to the blockage of a waterway that normally handles one-fifth of the world’s crude oil trade.

The situation on the ground in Israel is severe. Hours before the United States ultimatum, Iranian missiles bypassed Israeli defence systems, severely damaging residential buildings in the southern towns of Arad and Dimona. First responders reported that 84 people were injured in Arad, with 10 in serious condition. In Dimona, a town widely believed to house the only nuclear weapons arsenal in the Middle East, 33 people were wounded, including a 10-year-old boy. The Israeli military confirmed a direct missile hit on a building in Dimona. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised to retaliate on all fronts, and the Israeli military subsequently launched strikes on the Iranian capital, Tehran, targeting a university facility allegedly linked to nuclear weapon development.

Iran claimed its strikes were direct retaliation for earlier Israeli attacks on its Natanz nuclear facility, which houses underground uranium enrichment centrifuges. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps stated their forces also targeted military sites in the State of Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates. In addition, an Iranian ballistic missile attempt failed to reach a joint United States and United Kingdom military base at Diego Garcia, located 4,000 kilometres away in the Indian Ocean. As the conflict extends into its fourth week, international leaders from the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, South Korea, Australia, the United Arab Emirates, and the Kingdom of Bahrain have issued a joint statement condemning the closure of the strait and offering to help secure safe passage.
