Washington D.C., UNITED STATES — On the second day of the historic British state visit, President Donald Trump hosted a ceremonial welcome for King Charles III and Queen Camilla on the White House South Lawn.

The day’s events are being viewed as a critical diplomatic maneuver for the United Kingdom government, which is looking to the King to repair the “special relationship” currently strained by trade and security disputes.

During his welcoming remarks on Tuesday, President Trump adopted a humorous and personal tone, joking that his late mother had a “crush” on King Charles and was “glued to the television” during royal ceremonies. The President also praised the King’s “beautiful accent,” predicting it would make Congress “very envious” during the monarch’s scheduled address later today.

Okay News reports that Trump utilized the occasion to highlight a tree planted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1991 as a “living symbol” of the bond between the United States and the United Kingdom.

The atmosphere of levity was tempered by a more somber backdrop as survivors of the Jeffrey Epstein scandal gathered nearby, renewing calls for a meeting with the King to discuss Prince Andrew. Despite these protests and the recent assassination attempt on President Trump, Buckingham Palace confirmed that the itinerary—including the address to a joint session of Congress and a lavish state dinner—will proceed under heightened security.
