A female pedestrian in Tempe, Arizona on Monday died after being hit one of the self-driving cars operated by Uber.

The ride-hailing firm has responded by pulling all its self-driving cars in Tempe, Pittsburgh, San Francisco and Toronto, the company’s spokesperson said.

In what appears to be the first death caused by an autonomous vehicle, the woman was struck while crossing the street outside of a crosswalk, according to Tempe police.

The woman was rushed to the hospital where she died of her injuries.

The deadly collision, reported by ABC15, took place around 10pm at the intersection Mill Avenue and Curry Road.

The Uber vehicle was in autonomous mode with a human safety driver at the wheel when it struck the woman.
