MARYLAND, United States of America — United States of America President Donald Trump has publicly expressed his displeasure with the global leader of the Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV. Speaking to journalists on Sunday, April 12, 2026, at Joint Base Andrews, a military facility located in the state of Maryland, the American leader stated that he is dissatisfied with the pontiff following the religious leader’s recent appeals for international peace and an end to armed conflicts.

“I’m not a big fan of Pope Leo. He’s a very liberal person, and he’s a man that doesn’t believe in stopping crime,” Trump told the gathered reporters. The President further accused the 70-year-old American-born Pope of being too lenient on international security threats, stating that the religious leader is “toying with a country that wants a nuclear weapon.” Trump reinforced this position later on his social media platform, Truth Social, writing: “I don’t want a Pope who think it’s OK for Iran to have a Nuclear Weapon.”

The presidential criticism followed an impassioned plea delivered by Pope Leo XIV on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at Saint Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, an independent city-state enclaved within Rome, Italy. Addressing his congregation, the pontiff implored global leaders to cease violent hostilities, declaring: “Enough of the idolatry of self and money! Enough of the display of power! Enough of war!” As Okay News reports, the Holy See and the White House have increasingly found themselves holding opposing views on major geopolitical issues, establishing a tense dynamic between the two influential global entities.

The ideological divide between Washington and the Vatican extends beyond public statements. Recent reports from the Free Press publication alleged that the United States Department of Defense, commonly known as the Pentagon, summoned Cardinal Christophe Pierre, the Church’s diplomatic envoy to the United States of America, early in the year. The publication claimed that United States Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby reprimanded the cardinal. According to the disputed report, a military official warned that the United States of America “has the military power to do whatever it wants” while demanding “that the Church had better take its side.”

Both the Vatican and the United States government have firmly denied the existence of any diplomatic rift or hostile meetings. Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni dismissed the allegations, issuing a formal statement that clarified the situation. “The account presented by certain media outlets regarding this meeting does not correspond to the truth in any way,” Bruni stated, maintaining that interactions between the two parties remain cordial.

Despite official denials of a direct conflict, profound disagreements persist regarding the current administration’s policies. Pope Leo XIV has openly condemned the mass deportation campaign initiated by the United States government, describing the actions as “inhuman.” Furthermore, the two leaders have clashed over military interventions in the Middle East and the South American nation of Venezuela. The friction peaked on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, when President Trump issued severe warnings toward the Islamic Republic of Iran, threatening: “A whole civilisation will die tonight, never to be brought back again”. The Pope immediately denounced the threat as “truly unacceptable” and encouraged all parties to “come back to the table” for renewed diplomatic negotiations.

Although Pope Leo XIV recently welcomed a temporary ceasefire between the United States of America and Iran as a “sign of real hope,” international stability remains uncertain. Peace negotiations held in Islamabad, the capital city of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, collapsed abruptly on Saturday, April 11, 2026. Following a lengthy session of talks, United States Vice President James David Vance announced to reporters that the American delegation had presented its “final and best offer,” leaving the global community waiting to see what happens next as diplomatic channels appear to stall. By Monday, April 13, 2026, at 6:50 am West African Time (WAT, GMT+1), tensions remained high across the region.
