Babatunde Afuwape, a 28-year-old US-Nigerian, has been formally charged with first-degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting of a University of Toronto student.

The victim, 20-year-old Shivank Avasthi, was killed last month on the university’s Scarborough campus in an attack that investigators have categorized as both planned and deliberate.

Okay News reports that the incident took place on December 23, 2025, along the Highland Creek Trail, a frequent route for local students. While the shooting appears to have been a random act of violence with no prior connection between the suspect and the victim, police confirmed that Afuwape was on the campus for approximately an hour before the encounter occurred.

Authorities revealed that the suspect was already on parole for previous firearm-related offenses at the time of his arrest on December 28.

Following the recovery of a weapon, the police have reassured the academic community that the individual responsible is in custody, though investigations remain ongoing to fully understand the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
