WASHINGTON — United States President Donald Trump has stepped back from a threatened large-scale military strike against Iran, announcing a temporary halt to planned operations as diplomatic negotiations continue.
Okay News reports that in a statement posted on his Truth Social platform on Tuesday evening, Trump said U.S. forces would suspend what he described as a “massive, final military assault” for a period of two weeks.
The decision, he indicated, followed direct engagement with Pakistani leadership, who urged restraint as talks between Washington and Tehran progressed.
Trump specifically referenced discussions with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, noting their role in facilitating ongoing negotiations.
“Based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, of Pakistan, and wherein they requested that I hold off the destructive force being sent tonight to Iran, and subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks,” said the president.
The Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil transit route, has remained central to tensions in the region, with any disruption posing significant risks to international energy markets and maritime security.
Trump further framed the pause as part of a broader effort to de-escalate tensions and secure a longer-term agreement.
“This will be a double sided CEASEFIRE! The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East,” he added.
While the announcement signals a potential easing of immediate military confrontation, it remains unclear how Iranian authorities will respond to the conditions outlined by Washington, particularly regarding the reopening of the strategic waterway.
The development introduces a narrow diplomatic window, with global attention now focused on whether the temporary pause can translate into a sustained agreement between both nations amid long-standing geopolitical tensions.
