LAGOS, Nigeria — Veteran Yoruba actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has died after battling cancer, days after his family publicly disclosed that the disease had reached stage four.
His daughter, Kira Taiwo, announced the death on Sunday evening during a live session on her Instagram page.
Okay News reports that the actor’s death came only days after Kira and her sister appealed publicly for urgent medical intervention, saying their father’s condition had deteriorated and that they were seeking doctors or hospitals willing to continue his treatment.
Kira had earlier disclosed that Hassan was battling stage-four cancer and said the family had been told that chemotherapy could no longer continue at the hospital treating him.
The family had stressed at the time that it was not soliciting money from the public but was instead seeking access to medical professionals and facilities capable of exploring further treatment options.
Efforts were also made to support Hassan’s treatment before his death.
His daughters had acknowledged financial assistance from Senator Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, whom they said had been helping to cover medical expenses.
The veteran actor had spent more than four decades in Nigeria’s film industry and became one of the most recognisable figures in Yoruba-language cinema.
Hassan appeared in hundreds of productions during his career and was widely known for roles that helped establish him as a prominent figure in the Yoruba film sector.
Details of his funeral arrangements had not been announced by the family at the time of publication.
