The US has said that it’s in support of the planned use of electronic card readers for Nigeria’s upcoming general elections.

This was disclosed by the US Vice President, Joe Biden during a phone call with President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday, March 18.

Biden also spoke with the Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Muhammadu Buhari about the elections, a statement from the US embassy in Nigeria revealed.

“The Vice President further expressed the United States’ support for the Nigerian Independent National Electoral Commission and its work to deliver free, fair, and credible elections, in part through its essential efforts to distribute Permanent Voter Cards and help ensure that electronic voter card readers are in place and fully operational,” the statement reads.

The US VP also said that the American government would support Nigerians in the quest for free and fair elections.

US Secretary of State, John Kerry visited Nigeria in January in order to urge Buhari and Jonathan to prevent their supporters from resorting to violence.
