After successfully decimating Boko Haram in the North-east, the army is now set to launch a last onslaught on the insurgent in order totally rid the nation of terrorism.

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, said this yesterday during the opening ceremony of the COAS first quarter conference at the Army Headquarters Command Officers Mess, Abuja.

He said troops had continued to fight the insurgency with reinvigorated the spirit and commitment and would soon engage in a final push to weed terrorists out of the country.

“I am confident that I have the followership that would take Nigeria come out of this issue from the precarious situation we have found ourselves.”

The COAS though the army faced numerous challenges in its efforts in fighting insurgency, many of them would soon be resolved, as he had tabled them before President Muhammadu Buhari and the National Assembly.

He said: “The logistic deficiencies which have hindered the optimal conduct of the Nigeria Army’s counter-insurgency operations in the ast are being addressed. Let me reiterate that I have issued sustainment and logistics directives for Operation Lafiya Dole and have, to a large extent, made resources available to meet operational requirements for effectiveness.

“I have also taken necessary steps to ensure the optimum utilization of scarce resources while we await delivery of more platforms very soon.”

The army chief said the conference was a forum for self-audit of the Nigerian Army’s performance for the first quarter 2016 and means of taking stocks of activities outlined to identifying successes made and areas requiring readjustments “in order to actualise the army’s training objectives for the year in line with his vision to have a professionally responsive Nigerian in the discharge of its constitutional roles.”

Unveiling the new Army Doctrine, COAS said it was to guide the operations of the army during counter-terrorism and conventional operations.

He urged officers to study the doctrine very well, as it would be made available in every unit and formation.
