MENLO PARK, United States: WhatsApp has introduced browser-based audio and video calling, call transfers between devices, waiting rooms, faster high-definition video and noise suppression as part of an update to its calling service.
The company said the features are being introduced gradually across supported devices and will become available to all users.
Okay News reports that users can now make and receive one-on-one and group audio or video calls directly through WhatsApp Web without downloading the desktop application.
The browser version includes screen sharing, call reactions and a dedicated Calls tab displaying call history and favourite contacts.
WhatsApp said calls made through the web remain protected by end-to-end encryption, with no time limits or additional charges.
The update may be useful for people using shared computers, work devices that restrict software downloads or browsers as their preferred way to access the messaging service.
WhatsApp has also introduced a call transfer feature that allows users to move an active group call from a phone or tablet to the web or desktop version without ending the conversation.
A user who begins a call on a mobile device can transfer it to a computer when a larger screen is needed. The same process can be used to move a call from a computer back to a mobile device.
The new Waiting Room feature gives call organisers greater control over who enters group conversations.
When creating a WhatsApp call link, organisers can activate the “Require approval to join” setting. Participants who use the link will then remain in a waiting room until the organiser approves their entry.
The company has also introduced QuickHD, which is designed to provide high-definition video during the opening seconds of a call rather than increasing the video quality later.
A separate noise suppression feature reduces background sounds so that a caller’s voice can be heard more clearly in busy or loud environments.
Users can control noise suppression through the settings displayed during an active call.
WhatsApp said the web calling update offers the same privacy protections available through its mobile and desktop applications.
