WhatsApp, in collaboration with NBA superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, has released a compelling documentary titled “Ugo: A Homecoming Story.”

Directed by Rick Famuyiwa, the feature-length documentary offers an intimate portrayal of the Greek-Nigerian basketball sensation’s inaugural visit to his Nigerian homeland.

“Ugo,” named after Antetokounmpo’s Nigerian birth name, takes fans on an exclusive and profound journey, providing unparalleled access to the world of one of the most decorated basketball players.

The documentary is now available on YouTube and in select markets on Prime Video starting January 16, marking WhatsApp’s latest venture into original content.

The documentary follows Antetokounmpo’s first-ever visit to Nigeria, accompanied by his mother, who migrated from Nigeria to Greece 35 years ago.

Together, they explore their family’s heritage, traditions, and delve into the cultural roots that have shaped Antetokounmpo’s identity. “Ugo” showcases the power of familial connection, cultural discovery, and personal identity.

Giannis Antetokounmpo shared his thoughts on the project, stating, “WhatsApp helped me stay connected to my family and roots, allowing me to create my own unique version of heritage. To be able to travel back to where she was born and build a new Nigerian family has been one of my most rewarding experiences.”

The documentary, part of WhatsApp’s “There’s No One Like Us” film series, is a celebration of multicultural heritage and emphasizes the universal theme of self-discovery. WhatsApp, with its 2 billion users worldwide, aims to inspire individuals to embrace their unique identities.

Vivian Odior, Chief Brand Officer at WhatsApp, expressed the emotional resonance of the documentary, stating, “It’s a powerful reminder that the quest for identity and roots resonates universally, fostering a connection that transcends boundaries.”

Directed by Rick Famuyiwa, a Nigerian-American filmmaker known for his work on “The Mandalorian” and “Dope,” “Ugo” captures the life-changing moments of Antetokounmpo’s first steps in his homeland.

The documentary, born out of the partnership between WhatsApp and Antetokounmpo, features appearances from prominent global Nigerian creatives, including Grace Ladoja, founder of Homecoming; Stephen Tayo, a renowned photographer, and Yeni Kuti, daughter of the legendary Fela Kuti.
