Ike Ekweremadu, the Immediate past deputy president, has revealed why he contested against Ovie Omo-Agege.

Okay.ng reported that Omo-Agege secured 68 votes in the election to defeat Ike Ekweremadu who polled 37 votes for the deputy president position on Tuesday.

Speaking to newsmen after the whole process, Ekweremadu said that he wanted to have a referendum over the invasion of the red chamber in 2018, allegedly led by Omo-Agege.

In his words:

“I believe there must be a referendum. Look at what happened on a day I was presiding and chambers invaded. It is embarrassing that someone who led that operation will take a bow and be endorsed and we all work home like it doesn’t matter. I wanted a situation where we could present a referendum in respect of what transpired.”

He also disclosed that he made up his mind to run “early this morning.”

“We were not minded to run for any office, we thought that our friends in APC in consensus candidate that we can all be proud of, we don’t want a situation where we will say what happened here and the you came and endorsed same person deputy president of the senate. We need to exonerate ourselves.”

“it was not a contest to win or lose, I wanted to make a statement.”

In addition, Ekweremadu noted that “For over 20 years I have been very busy with politics and governance. So I think I can have a rest and reflect on other things.”
