A faction within the Peoples Democratic Party, one of Nigeria’s major political parties with nationwide influence, which is aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has announced an emergency gathering of two of its most powerful organs: the Board of Trustees and the National Executive Committee.

The development, which deepens the already expanding rift inside the party, was confirmed on Monday through a formal notice released by the factional National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu. The statement, which was circulated on the official X platform account of the media aide to the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Lere Olayinka, indicated that the meetings will take place on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, within the National Executive Committee Hall at the Peoples Democratic Party National Secretariat located in Wadata Plaza in Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria and the administrative centre of West Africa’s largest democracy.

According to the announcement, the Board of Trustees meeting will commence at 11:00 a.m., followed by the National Executive Committee meeting at 2:00 p.m. The notice emphasised the significance of full participation, stressing, “Attendance is very important as crucial matters will be discussed and addressed.”
Okay News reports.

The emergency summon comes only days after the Peoples Democratic Party, at its 2025 National Convention held in Ibadan in Oyo State in Southwestern Nigeria, expelled several prominent party figures. Those expelled include former Rivers State Governor and current Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, former National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade, the factional National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose, and the Imo State Peoples Democratic Party Chairman Austin Nwachukwu, among others, over allegations of anti-party behaviour.

The motion for expulsion was initiated by Bode George, a former Deputy National Chairman (South) of the party who has long been regarded as a key elder statesman within Nigeria’s political establishment. The proposal was then seconded by Bauchi State People Democratic Party Chairman Samaila Buga before being subjected to a voice vote. Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, who serves as the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum, officially conducted the vote, which was overwhelmingly supported by delegates, signalling an aggressive move by the party leadership to re-establish discipline and cohesion within its structure.
