Abuja, Nigeria – A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), supported by the Nigerian Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has rejected claims that it will endorse President Bola Tinubu during the 2027 general elections. Jungudo Mohammed, the National Publicity Secretary of the faction, clarified the position of the group on Monday, March 23, 2026. Speaking during a morning broadcast on Channels Television, he stated that the political party will nominate its own presidential candidate. Okay News reports that this clarification comes amid growing public speculation regarding the political allegiance of the faction.
“We are not supporting President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for 2027 general election. We will do everything to field our own candidate,” Mohammed said. He added, “And I am appealing to Nigerians to please give us little time between now and the time we will conduct our primaries.”
The rumours of a potential alliance with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) stem from recent statements made by Nyesom Wike. Earlier in March 2026, the minister publicly promised to work toward the re-election of President Tinubu, emphasizing that his support would cross party lines for candidates aligned with the Nigerian president. However, Mohammed dismissed these speculations.
“All these rumours about we are supporting APC or [being an] appendage of the APC will come to pass,” he stated. He further explained, “Time will take care of all these rumours and propaganda. It is aimed at either discrediting the PDP or discrediting the Honourable Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike.”
Despite the differing public stances on the 2027 elections, the faction continues to praise the minister. Mohammed described Wike as a vital political asset to the country. “He is an asset as far as political space and political development of this country concerned,” Mohammed noted. “No political party will not wish to have Nyesom Wike in their fold.”
As the political landscape in Nigeria prepares for the next election cycle, the Peoples Democratic Party faction intends to focus on organizing its internal elections to choose a presidential flagbearer.
