Wike Leads Former PDP Governors to President Tinubu in Strategic Meeting at Aso Rock

On Saturday evening, President Bola Tinubu convened a significant meeting with prominent figures from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), signaling potential early political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections. The gathering took place at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa and was spearheaded by Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former governor of Rivers State.

Wike, alongside close allies primarily drawn from the defunct G5 Governors faction, which had earlier distanced itself from the PDP leadership during the last election cycle, led the delegation. The G5 governors had notably opposed the PDP’s 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, instead backing Tinubu, then the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate.

Following the 2023 elections, President Tinubu appointed Wike, still a PDP member, as the Minister of the FCT in August 2023, a move that underscored the evolving political dynamics. Present at the meeting were former governors Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State, Samuel Ortom of Benue State, and Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State, the latter two also members of the former G5 group.

While the details of the discussions remain confidential, insiders indicate that the meeting centered on exploring ways to foster cooperation and integrate these influential former governors into the current political framework, potentially reshaping alliances ahead of the next electoral contest.
