Okay News reports that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has stated that he is ready to appear as a witness in the ongoing trial of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, if summoned by the court.
Wike made this known during his monthly media chat held in Abuja on Friday, in response to questions about being listed by Kanu among witnesses expected to testify in the case.
The minister clarified that he was not contacted by Kanu or his legal team and has not received any court papers regarding the matter. He emphasised that as a law-abiding citizen, he would comply with any legal directive should the court issue a subpoena requiring his appearance.
His reaction followed reports that Kanu had informed the Federal High Court, Abuja, earlier in the week of his readiness to open his defence and call 23 witnesses, including Wike, former Minister of Defence, General Theophilus Danjuma (retd), and former Chief of Army Staff, General Tukur Buratai (retd).
Speaking further, Wike said, “If you see Nnamdi Kanu, you ask him why he listed me. I did not go to him to say I want to be a witness; you are the one saying that. Nobody has served me process; nobody has subpoenaed me. So, because I saw Wike has been listed, therefore, I begin to run helter-skelter? No. If I am served, if I am subpoenaed to give evidence, I must obey the court. I must appear.”
The FCT Minister maintained that his commitment to due process remains firm, stressing that no one becomes a witness simply through media reports.
Observers say Wike’s stance aligns with his long-held public position on respecting the rule of law, a principle he has consistently echoed throughout his political career.
