BORDEAUX, France – Firefighters in southwestern France are working to contain expanding wildfires that threaten the metropolitan area of Bordeaux, forcing authorities to evacuate more than 220,000 residents across the region.
The blazes have intensified during an extreme summer heatwave affecting western Europe, with regional temperatures averaging 32.2°C (90°F). Okay News reports that the main fire front has advanced within 15 kilometers of Bordeaux, reaching popular coastal destinations such as Cap Ferret in the Aquitaine region.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez described conditions as difficult, while local farmers have joined emergency responders to assist in frontline firefighting efforts. Bordeaux Mayor Thomas Cazenave confirmed that emergency services remain on high alert as changing wind patterns continue to complicate containment operations.
