Nigeria’s Super Eagles have officially appointed Wilfred Ndidi as their new captain, following the retirement of long-serving leaders Ahmed Musa and William Troost-Ekong.
The announcement was made through the national team’s official social media platforms, confirming that the Besiktas midfielder will now wear the armband as Nigeria prepares for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Ndidi is not new to the leadership role. He has served as stand-in captain on several occasions in recent years whenever Musa or Troost-Ekong were unavailable. With both senior figures now stepping away from international duty, the responsibility has formally been handed to the experienced midfielder.
Speaking after the announcement, Ndidi described the appointment as a major honour and stressed the importance of unity within the squad. He said he had already begun discussions with senior players and coaching staff to ensure everyone understands the task ahead.
According to him, success will depend on collective effort, clear communication, and shared commitment from players and officials alike, as the team works toward its AFCON 2025 ambitions.
Ndidi’s elevation signals a new leadership chapter for the Super Eagles, with expectations that his experience at club and international level will help guide Nigeria through the tournament and beyond.
