Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has approved the construction of a new secretariat for the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Gusau, the state capital.

The NUJ Zamfara State Council confirmed the development in a statement signed by its chairman, Ibrahim Musa Maizare, on Thursday. The council described the decision as a fulfilment of the governor’s campaign promise to provide journalists in the state with a modern, fully equipped workspace.

“This development fulfils a commitment the governor made to the union prior to his assumption of office, where he assured that his administration would provide a modern and befitting edifice for working journalists in the state,” the statement read.

According to the council, all preparations for the commencement of the project have been completed, with the contract awarded to a prominent indigenous contractor and elder statesman, Alhaji Garba Almajir.

Speaking during an inspection at the project site, Almajir pledged to deliver a state-of-the-art facility that aligns with the governor’s vision of making the new NUJ Secretariat one of the best in Africa.

The council commended Governor Lawal for his continued support to the media and for prioritising press development in Zamfara State. It added that the project would not only enhance the working conditions of journalists but also strengthen press freedom and professionalism across the state.
