58 Countries Back Okonjo-Iweala’s Reappointment as WTO DG

Fifty-eight member countries of the World Trade Organization (WTO) have backed the reappointment of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as Director-General for a second term. This endorsement came during a meeting of the WTO General Council on July 22.

The African Group had proposed Okonjo-Iweala’s reappointment, citing her achievements during her first term.

The 58 member countries, representing over a third of the WTO’s membership, praised her hard work and accomplishments.

Okonjo-Iweala, the first woman and African to hold the position, expressed gratitude for the support and indicated she was favorably inclined to serving a second term. Her current term expires on August 31, 2025.
