South Africa’s Caster Semenya on Sunday ran a world-record time in the rarely-run 600m.

The 800metres specialist shaved off 0.86secs from the old record, finishing the race in 1:21:77 secs.

The 26-year-old, a three-time world champion over 800m, adds the record to her wins in London to draw the curtains on a fulfilling athletic season for her.

Semenya said she was delighted to end her season in the German capital where she won world gold eight years ago.

“I feel at home here, always welcomed and loved. I won my first world title here, so this city is special for me,” beamed the South African.

“I wanted to deliver (the world record) to make the people here happy.”

Semenya’s athletic career has been dogged by gender accusations ever since her 2009 winning run at the Berlin Olympic Stadium when, as a teenager, she won the 800m title.
