The Ministry of Labour and Employment says the government will commence negotiations with striking university lecturers immediately after the Sallah holidays.

President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Professor Biodun Ogunyemi declared an indefinite strike three weeks ago to protest against breach of an agreement between the union and the government.

Both parties have been involved in series of meetings in a bid to resolving the issues tied to the 2009 agreement.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the spokesman of the ministry, Samuel Olowookere, said the commencement of the discuss was in line with the request of ASUU.

Olowookere said: ”In view of its determination to end every disruption in the academic calendar of universities, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Sen. Chris Ngige wishes to inform all stakeholders and the general public that conciliation with the university teachers will resume immediately after the Sallah break as requested by ASUU.”

The spokesman however did not state when the talks would commence.
