Anderlecht have sacked manager Rene Weiler, just over a week before their Champions League clash with Celtic.

Weiler led Anderlecht to their 34th league title last season, but has been dismissed after a slow start in the Pro League.

Anderlecht have won just two of seven league games and were also beaten 3-0 by Bayern Munich in the Champions League last week.

A club statement read: “On Monday, RSC Anderlecht and coach Rene Weiler decided to separate.

“Rene Weiler won the 34th title of the club, reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League, qualified RSC Anderlecht for the group stage of the Champions League and stimulated the progression of young talents like Youri Tielemans and Leander Dendoncker.

“The club thanks Rene Weiler for his commitment, his services and his professionalism. The current technical staff, composed of Nicolas Frutos, David Sesa and Thomas Binggeli, take over – on an interim basis – the sporting management of the team.”

Celtic travel to Belgium to face Anderlecht on Wednesday, September 27.

Brendan Rodgers’ side were beaten 5-0 by Paris St-Germain in their Champions League Group B opener.
